Explore Paris & Beyond
Insider-written guides to every arrondissement, day trip, and hidden corner — curated by sweetparistravelsguides for curious, independent travellers.
3rd & 4th
Wander through centuries of Parisian history in one of the city's most vibrant quarters. From the Place des Vosges to boutique-lined Rue de Bretagne, Le Marais blends Jewish heritage, contemporary art galleries, and some of the finest falafel this side of the Seine.
18th
Climb above the rooftops of Paris to a village that refuses to be swallowed by the city. Montmartre's winding stairs, artist ateliers, and the luminous Sacré-Cœur basilica create an atmosphere that has enchanted painters, poets, and romantics for over a century.
93 – North Paris
Beyond the périphérique lies one of France's most creatively explosive territories. From the Stade de France to the Basilica of Saint-Denis where French kings are buried, this working-class département rewards curious travellers willing to venture off the classic tourist trail.
1st & 4th
The small island at the centre of the Seine is where Paris was born. Today it holds Notre-Dame Cathedral — now magnificently restored — the Sainte-Chapelle's stained glass, and the atmospheric flower market, all within comfortable walking distance of each other.
10th
Iron footbridges arch over emerald-green water as locals picnic on the banks and designers fill converted warehouses with atelier-studios. Canal Saint-Martin is where real Paris happens — far from the tourist crowd, utterly authentic, and increasingly recognised as one of Europe's most liveable urban corridors.
1st
Hidden behind an anonymous archway off Rue de Rivoli lies one of Paris's finest secrets: a perfectly proportioned garden enclosed by colonnades, home to the famous black-and-white Buren columns, antique dealers, haute cuisine, and the most tranquil bench in central Paris.
20th
More than a cemetery, Père Lachaise is a 44-hectare city within the city, where Proust, Chopin, Edith Piaf, Jim Morrison, and Oscar Wilde rest beneath elaborate tombs. Its tree-lined avenues and extraordinary monumental sculpture make it one of the most moving outdoor experiences in Paris.
6th
The Left Bank neighbourhood where Simone de Beauvoir argued existentialism over café crèmes at Les Deux Magots remains one of Paris's most refined addresses. Literary bookshops, flagship fashion houses, and the best cheese shops in the city make Saint-Germain an endlessly rewarding afternoon.
20th & 19th
Birthplace of Édith Piaf and long the gateway district for waves of immigrants, Belleville has reinvented itself as Paris's most exciting street art destination. Its steep streets, Chinese restaurants, artist studios, and open-atelier weekends make it essential for travellers who crave the city's living, breathing edge.
Yvelines – 30 min from Paris
No single building better encapsulates the ambition and excess of absolute monarchy than Versailles. The Hall of Mirrors, the Apollo Fountain, the Grand Trianon, and 800 hectares of formal gardens make a full day here feel barely enough — go early, go on a weekday, go prepared.
11th
The 11th arrondissement's Oberkampf corridor is Paris's great nocturnal neighbourhood — a stretch of bars, live music venues, natural wine bars, and unpretentious bistros that comes alive after 9pm and rarely stops before 2am. By day, it's equally good: bakeries, concept stores, and the best coffee in eastern Paris.
Seine-et-Marne – 45 min from Paris
Napoleon called it 'the true home of kings, the house of centuries.' The royal château at Fontainebleau rivals Versailles for grandeur but utterly surpasses it for atmosphere — set within a 25,000-hectare forest beloved by bouldering climbers, landscape painters, and Parisians desperate for a genuine escape.
April–June and September–October are ideal — mild temperatures, manageable crowds, and Paris at its most romantic. July and August are busy and warm; January offers fewer tourists and great museum access.
Service charges are legally included in all French restaurant bills (service compris). Tipping is appreciated but never expected.
